A SEMPI HAPPINESS & FRIENDSHIP GROUP?

HOW TO JOIN A

SEMPI HAPPINESS AND FRIENDSHIP GROUP

We have started a brand new MEMBERS RUN group for anyone living with mental health challenges, who would like to meet new friends, and be part of an active group where the members are running the show IN THE SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS OF NSW

We have capped the age limit to 55, as we discovered that there are limited activities for this demographic in the Highlands.

We meet every week at Bowral library at 12pm, then go out!

This group is for ALL ABILITIES ! and is run by the group members, with a professional mentor (Alyse Price-Tobler (MCAP) for guidance.

Please note: there is NO STAFF! This is a COMPLETELY MEMBERS RUN GROUP, so please take this into account when referring clients, or becoming a group member yourself.

Come and meet new buddies, decide where you are going to go, how often and when! Group members call all of the shots here!

We also practice the 'SEMPI Social Communication Model', so that everyone feels heard, validated and understood, as we are an autonomous group that care about each other.

Things we are going to do:

Walking, picnics, train travel, visit the zoo, aquarium, ferries, the beach, barbeque, have ‘pot luck’ lunches, visit cafes, restaurants, play games, go bowling...you name it,

we can talk about doing it!

HOW TO START A SEMPI GROUP IN YOUR AREA!

ATTENTION ANYONE WANTING TO HELP THEIR COMMUNITIES ALTRUISTICALLY

START YOUR OWN SEMPI HAPPINESS AND FRIENDSHIP GROUP!

The beauty of a SEMPI Happiness and Friendship group, is that you can START YOUR OWN GROUP, and adapt this idea to any community, anywhere in the whole world!

ANYONE feeling isolated, lonely, or unheard, can come together and make new friends, learn deeper levels of communication for each other,  and increase personal empowerment and autonomy skills, while going on outings!

The members don't have to have any particular diagnosis either!

WHAT CAN MEMBERS DO?

# MEMBERS CHOOSE THE TIME, HOW OFTEN AND WHEN TO MEET DATES

# MEMBERS CHOOSE HOW MUCH THEY WANT TO SPEND, IF ANY, FOR EACH OUTING

# MEMBERS CHOOSE WHERE TO GO

# MEMBERS MAINTAIN GROUP DIRECTION (unless in an emergency, when mentor may take over due to safety)

# MEMBERS ELECT GROUP LEADERS, WHICH CAN CHANGE SO EVERYONE GETS A CHANCE TO LEAD

#IT IS HIGHLY ADVISABLE THAT A MENTOR (who knows an can teach SEMPI SCM) OVERSEES THE GROUP (if members are in the vulnerable category of frail, disabled, or have mental health issues)

You can start a group for people in hospital, nursing homes, with your own friends, host dinner parties, lunches in the park, or afternoon tea....anything and anyone!!!

The GROUP criteria is:

1. Members learn the SEMPI model, so that can check that each person in the group is O.K each week

2. Members must be taught how to run the group themselves democratically, (overseen by the mentor)

3. All group members must be allowed to have a voice, and be able to express choice and autonomy

4. Members must agree to group rules: 4a. Be kind and courteous, 4b. No hate speech or bullying 4c. Respect everyone's privacy 4d. No drugs or alcohol allowed 4e. Members privacy. (see extended rules below).

GROUP RULES

1. Be Kind and Courteous

We're all in this together to create a welcoming environment. Let's treat everyone with respect. Healthy debates are natural, but kindness is required.

2. No Hate Speech or Bullying

Make sure everyone feels safe. Bullying of any kind isn't allowed, and degrading comments about things like race, religion, culture, sexual orientation, gender or identity will not be tolerated.

3. Respect Everyone's Privacy

Being part of this group requires mutual trust. Authentic, expressive discussions make groups great, but may also be sensitive and private. What's shared in the group should stay in the group.

4. No drugs or alcohol allowed

Anyone turning up to the group intoxicated or under the influence of any illegal drug will be asked to leave immediately, due to group member safety being our primary concern.

5. Members privacy

Any group member found to be speaking negatively without good reason about a fellow group member will be asked to leave the group
