What is The SEMPI Social Communication Model?

Welcome to the SEMPI SOCIAL COMMUNICATION MODEL WEBSITE!

A  personal note from Alyse Price-Tobler (MCAP) PhD candidate USC Social Sciences Dept.

Hello, and a sincere welcome to you.

My name is Alyse Price-Tobler, and I am the writer of the SEMPI Social Communication Model (SEMPI SCM). I am a trauma informed Clinical Psychotherapist with a Master's degree in counselling and psychotherapy, and I have worked professionally within the field of 'mental health and disabilities' on the front line in Australia for 34 years.

I am currently studying a PhD at The University of the Sunshine Coast in the social sciences department. My PhD is focusing on adult children of parental alienation/high conflict divorce, and how they begin to heal from severely negative experiences from their childhoods.

I have designed the SEMPI model because when I was a child, I did not feel as though I had a voice. I realised that as an adult, I was only one person in a sea of people who needed someone to sit and hear them unconditionally...so I wrote the SEMPI model to teach communities how to confidently sit with each other in the hope of reducing suicide and loneliness.

I have designed the SEMPI SCM over the past six years to teach people from age 5 up, how to sit with someone when they ask someone "ARE YOU OK?" and the person answers "NO." The SEMPI SCM is currently being used across the world to bring communities closer, build resilience, deeper level communication skills, and save lives.

The SEMPI SCM teaches community members how to easily, and sincerely hold space for those who don't feel very comfortable when someone near them is NOT OK. By learning the SEMPI FREE 'pay it forward' altruistic community model, we can all become #SEMPIfirstresponders to our valuable community members when they need us the most.

Teaching SEMPI creates a SEMPI 'pay it forward' chain so that we can help other humans who share this amazing journey we call LIFE, and we can start to rely FIRSTLY on each other instead of waiting for months to access government services, or pay out money we may not have to private therapists. Let's try to see if WE can work it out together first, then access services if our problems become too big. We used to turn toward our family members and friends first all the time! Let's try and believe that we have the skills to help ourselves first before we turn to outside resources!

THREE SEMPI SCM MODELS

There are three models under the current SEMPI SCM banner. These three models are NOT counselling models.

They are for all members of community to use, and a based on a reciprocal 'Listener' and 'Sharer' relationship.

The SEMPI children's model (5 and up), the SEMPI adults model, and the SEMPI professional empathy workplace version. I have designed the SEMPI SCM as a community aid to primarily stop loneliness, and reduce suicide and mental health stigma within our communities. The SEMPI SCM also helps to reduce bullying between community members, by teaching the practice of empathetic listening and altruism through a ‘payitforward’ philosophy. We can all walk and support each other together.
SEMPI has the power to change the world! Thank you so much for visiting my website.

WHAT IS THE SEMPI SOCIAL COMMUNICATION MODEL?

The SEMPI Social Communication Models teach and empower any community member (child or adult) from any social class, how to have a deeper level of conversation, if you ask someone, ‘ARE YOU O.K?’ AND THEY SAY NO.

The ‘SEMPI Social Communication Model’ (pronounced Sem-pie) has been developed primarily with the purpose of reducing ''the tribal stigma of race, nation, and religion" (Goffman, 1963) within our communities.

  • The SEMPI SCM teaches THE NEXT STEP to the 'ARE YOU OK?' question, if this question feels too hard to sit with, seems confusing, or just doesn't feel right for the person saying 'NO.'

  • The SEMPI SCM teaches community members, deeper level empathetic conversation skills, (in under 20 minutes), to instigate when someone is NOT OK and needs to talk straightaway.

  • The SEMPI SCM is written to teach community empowerment, reduce stigma and loneliness, and to save lives.

  • This SEMPI SCM has a ‘pay it forward' philosophy, so that it can get out into the community faster.

  • The SEMPI SCM works by having two people sit together, (a Listener, and a Sharer). The 'Sharer' asks the 'Listener' to run through the SEMPI SCM with them, and together they can speak about exactly what is happening in the 'Sharers' life, for them right now, then they can swap roles, and pay it forward!

  • The SEMPI SCM teaches 'Social and Emotional Learning' activities (SEL).

  • The SEMPI SCM promotes a broader 'needs' and personal insight vocabulary.

  • The SEMPI SCM strengthens the skills of communication, so that all parties feel heard, validated, and understood, while teaching practical listening skills, which are crucial to allowing community members to feel truly heard. Learning these skills may lead to a more equal social class power balance, while CROSSING RACE, CREED, AGE, COLOUR AND RELIGION.

  • The 'SSCM'  gives an immediate snapshot into a persons mental and physical health, right at that moment, so that a concise, and accurate plan can be devised if needed, by the 'Listener' and the 'Sharer', and then shared with a health care professional, when necessary.

  • The 'SEMPI SCM,' is designed to stop the loneliness, silence, stigma, and isolation, that exists within our communities AND CAN BE USED intergenerationally!

  • The SEMPI SCM is helping to create a world where people do not simply survive, but engage in a way that works to achieve invigorating internal and interpersonal satisfaction.

  • The SEMPI SCM is currently being used within community to allow all members, no matter their story, to learn to have an empowered voice, while gaining insight into their own story.

  • PLEASE NOTE, THE SEMPI SCM IS NOT a counselling model.

  • The SEMPI SCM community model version is FREE FOR EVERYONE TO PAY FORWARD!
